I’ve been thinking about my parents a lot lately, since they are approaching retirement age. My husband’s dad retired last year, and his mom expects to retire this year. So I’ve been contemplating their situations. I also had a brief email conversation with Patrick over at Cash Money Life in which he wondered how many […]

With all the craziness in the stock market (bailouts and rate cuts just aren’t doing the job), I thought I’d toss up this poll:
As the economy tanks, what are you doing?
Nothing. Overall, things head back up. I’m sitting tight.
Taking a measured approach. Looking at my portfolio. Keeping the solid investments. Considering cash.
Sitting back. I pulled […]

The Dow ended waaaay down on the day today, shedding as many as 777 points at one point. The House voted down the bailout package, and investors showed their displeasure, sending the stock market tumbling. Another day like this, and the market will be below 10,000 points. I received this interesting question from a reader last night:

One of the things I am constantly asked is whether it is time to get out of the stock market. Since, over the long haul, the stock market usually manages to come out ahead, I say. “No.”

Yesterday, Ben Bernanke testified before Congress about economic stimulus and the possibility of more rate cuts. He did stop short of saying that the US would enter a recession. Instead, he pointed out that while economic growth will slow, negative growth was not a foregone conclusion.
The stock market wasn’t overly impressed by his testimony, and […]

One of the main things to keep in mind about investing, and even the economy, is that the whole thing is cyclical. There will be downs as well as ups. The idea is to arrange your personal finances — and your investment plan — in such a way that you can weather the down cycles […]

Today’s breaking financial news is an emergency Fed rate cut of 75 basis points, bringing the overnight lending rate to 3.5 percent and the fed funds rate to 4.0 percent. This is the biggest cut since 1982. Apparently, while the Fed still won’t say “recession,” it is starting to take the economic situation seriously. MarketWatch […]

One of the keys that Paul Farrell mentions in his MarketWatch article on beating the bear market is the importance of allocations:
Once you determine exactly what asset allocations fit your particular needs, stick to them. Remember, the mix of specific indexes is crucial, not the specific funds. Rebalance when necessary to bring your portfolio in […]
