The Economy: Consumers Are in Charge

by miranda on July 25th, 2008

You can save money through hagglingEven though — according to many people — the economy is tanking, there are ways to take advantage of the way things are going. Deals can be found, and CNN Money points out that the art of haggling is making a comeback.

Of course, many of the things that you can haggle about are more along the lines of “creature comforts.” We have a certain lifestyle that many of us are trying to maintain, and much of the budgetary cutbacks many are making are in the name of finding creative ways to maintain.

You probably won’t be able to haggle on the price of gas, but here are some things that you might be able to get a better deal on:

  • Health clubs
  • Service for cell phones
  • Internet services
  • Cable or satellite service
  • Clothing
  • Electronics
  • Autos

Another thing you can do is pull out the old standard: comparison shopping. While you probably can’t really haggle a whole lot when it comes to such items as interest rates, insurance quotes and grocery shopping, comparison shopping can help you find the best price that will save you the most money.

My uncle was the king of haggling and his style served me well on two trips to Mexico and Belize.

How do you handle someone who is offended when you try to haggle?

Not everyone is willing to haggle. If someone becomes offended, then you need to decide whether you will pay full price, or whether it’s not worth the trouble. Another thing you can do is ask if there are any deals (if you want to buy more merchandise) for quantity.
